As Andrew said, for portraits 55-250 works nicely in 55-100 range. Try taking a head & shoulders shot at 18, 35 and 55 settings, then at 70 and 100. Compare facial features, backgrounds and subject isolation between shots. Do this in aperture priority mode (Av) and set f5.6 which all of the focal lengths share..

Some of the EF-S 18-55mm lenses rotate the front element to focus. For a CPL filter, which relies upon rotational orientaiton to be effective and useful, a rotating lens is problematic. Better lenses focus internally, without rotating the filter ring threads. There are, of course, many lenses that don't focus internally but still don't rotate h4TDe.
