He was dismissed by many, perhaps because he refuted Newton’s theories of colour by suggesting that colour was subjectively experienced.
This article seeks to bring new perspectives for a reflexive reading of Goethe’s Theory of Colours, to enable an appreciation of it, beyond the well-known polemics with the ideas of Newton, based on recognizing the proto-phenomenological attitude of the German poet and his interest in a direct and subjective experiencing of the chromatic phenomenon.
